Champagne Celebration

AGM, Wednesday, December 1, 2010

On Wednesday, December 1, our friends and neighbours gathered for a champagne celebration of the fifth anniversary of our move to Islington Village.

Executive Director Louise Garfield kicked off the festivities by expressing how the move to the diverse and vibrant neighbourhood of Islington Village marked a special milestone in our 37-year history. She described how the space has redefined Arts Etobicoke and how the Office and Gallery has become a space where aspiring artists of all ages learn and laugh, where friendships are made and where a community creates together.

After summarizing some highlights of the last five years, Louise introduced cherished volunteer, artist, educator and friend Faten Toubasi who lives just down the street from us in the diverse Mabelle neighbourhood.

Faten described how she first visited our office in the summer of 2007, just a few months after she arrived in Canada from Palestine. She began volunteering for our Saturday Storefront Art Classes, and then became involved in other programs, such as our smART stART Student Art Show, Art on the Move and the Art Alley Mural Project. She is currently facilitating our newly launched free After-School-Drop-In art program.

Then 13-year-old Farah, who came to Canada in 2006 from Jordan and who also lives in the nearby Mabelle neighbourhood, talked about her experience with Arts Etobicoke. She loves art and got involved with Arts Etobicoke about two years ago through the Saturday Storefront Art Classes. Most recently, Farah has joined our After-School-Drop-In art program where she has fun making art with her friends and two younger brothers Omar and Osama.

We ended the celebration with a screening of a documentary on Art on the Move (Year 2) – A Mobile Community Arts Initiative (presented in partnership with Lakeshore Arts).

Special thanks go to guitarist Chris Malone who provided live music for the event. Chris is a teacher at the Kingsway Conservatory of Music, one of the recipients of our Presidents' Legacy Scholarship awards.

We also thank all those who celebrated with us as we marked the achievements made in our Islington Village location and look ahead to the future.
