Pure Data Pilot Project - Summer 2018
Over the month of July we ran our first Pure Data Pilot Project, a totally accessible, first-
of-its-kind opportunity for youth to learn basic computer coding concepts and electronic
music theory utilizing an open source, object-oriented software called Pure Data (Pd). Six
youth from the Rexdale neighbourhood of Etobicoke – our Pure Data ambassadors – met
every week for two hours at the Albion Library to learn about all things MIDI, For Loops
and everything in between. We are so proud of these community leaders who came to the
program with no prior music training or coding experience and devoted part of their
summer break to learning something new and boosting their employable skills. Thanks to
funding from the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, we were able to pay the youth
ambassadors for their participation in working through this pilot project with us! Working
independently through their own “patches” and collaboratively in identifying Pd
communication strategies, these brilliant minds helped us develop the next Pure Data
program for youth, taking place this fall at the Albion Library.
