Year 2 - 2010

Combining the best of community activism, clever culture-jamming and a focus on mobility in the city, Art on the Move pairs artists with organizations… for the act of decorating buses and trucks with artistic messages that will beautify the vehicles for passengers and passersby alike., June 2010


Art on the Move expands with the launch of five more art-wrapped vehicles on June 16, 2010 at the National Yacht Club.  The kids, teens, adults and seniors who participated in the project joined the media and other guests, including Donna Cansfield, MPP Etobicoke Centre and Arts Etobiocke Board Member Councillor Suzan Hall, to celebrate the official unveiling of these unique mobile artworks.

This year the project involves five vehicles and five teams:

  • Artist Michael Brown and eight youth aged 16 to 21 from the graffiti transformation program at the Harbourfront Community Centre brightened the waters of Lake Ontario by creating a 'Spirit of the Sea' design for a 32-foot sailboat.
  • Graffiti and digital media artist MEDIAH worked with twenty youth from Youth Without Shelter's Steps to Success program to wrap their delivery van in urban artwork.
  • Artist Leah Gold and adults aged 55 to 90 at Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood Centre transformed a Toyota truck owned by contractor and designer Brian Hicks of MetroMan.
  • Twenty-six children from the Karen Kain School of the Arts worked with artist Susan Rowe Harrison to create artwork inspired by their locale for a van belonging to Autoshare.
  • Together with artist Rebecca Baird, three youth mixed media and graffiti artists from the Native Canadian Centre adorned a van belonging to C1 Art Space.

A three-year program funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Art on the Move project now boasts a fleet of eight vehicles - three vehicles were created in Year 1 (2009) and another five will be created in 2011 for a total of 13 vehicles.

Said Karl Sprogis, Co-Chair at the launch, "These mobile murals will provide surprise encounters with art throughout the GTA and inspire other artists and vehicle owners to get involved and get on the bus - or, in the case of this year, on the boat."
